Humans are social creatures. Even the most introverted and reclusive among us carry the innate desire to belong. As relationship psychologist Esther Perel explains: we heal in community. ‘Self-care’ culture can be misleading. True self-care and self compassion are not about going off to ‘sort ourselves out’ and then re-engaging in relationships and life when we’re doing better. Transformational growth, healing, and insight take place in healthy community where we can nurture safe connections, receive support, and build trust. When I show you my vulnerabilities, fears, and struggles, and you meet them with compassion, understanding, and acceptance, I learn that I am enough as I am. My relationship with you helps me heal my relationship with me. Even though current culture and digital evolution means we’re physically apart often these days, it is possible to be together emotionally and psychologically. Online group meditation is a reliable anchor not just to keep ourselves centered but to keep us healthily tethered to a caring community that’s on the same path as us. Despite what you may think on days when it feels like (almost) everybody is driving you mad, a sense of belonging in a community is an undeniable part of a healthy and fulfilling life.
